The importance of six month visits
You may wonder why you need a regular dental exam every six months. You had a clean bill of health at your last dental visit, so why do you need another exam? It is a question many patients ask and for good reason! Having a yearly exam, or every six months, makes sure potential issues are early detected and if necessary, can be corrected and treated without hassle. A small cavity usually requires a small filling, but left undetected for a year, can lead to more serious dental problems like root canals, crowns, and implants. Dr. Sugiki is here to help assess your oral health and ensure your teeth, gums, and mouth maintain excellent dental health!
A dental exam is more than simply checking teeth
A routine dental exam will do more than just check your teeth. During your dental visit Dr. Sugiki will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums to check for tooth decay, any current restorations or dental work, and gum and bone disease. Your exam may consist of diagnostic x-rays to diagnose missing teeth or root alignment issues. A thorough screening will be performed to help detect any potential early oral cancer of the lips, tongue, and mouth.
BENEFITS of A Dental Checkup:
Dental CheckUp FAQ
A full dental examination, which includes a clinical exam, possible x-rays, and head and neck exam to assess for oral cancer - should be done twice yearly. This ensures early diagnosis of problems otherwise unnoticed like decay between teeth, cysts or tumors, gum disease or impacted teeth.
A comprehensive dental exam will tell you the caliber of your oral health, which also may indicate any systemic problems. Gum disease is linked to diabetes, heart disease, stroke and preterm and/or low birth weight. Routine dental exams and professional cleanings can prevent many of these health problems, and also identify them to manage these problems.
A dental exam tells us more about our bodies than just cavities. Many times, a dentist will evaluate teeth and find health related problems like a tongue-tie, GERD or acid reflux that a primary care doctor may not initially notice without symptoms. Our mouth also tells us about sleep and breathing disorders including snoring and apneas that can block the airway leading to serious health conditions.
Many dental insurances will cover 1-2 yearly dental exams. In the case your dental exam is not covered, our office is dedicated to providing affordable dental care. Call our office for more information.
